Retired is Good!

Well life is now in the last half of the full circle for me. Being retired has been wonderful!
In one of my recent posts I think I mentioned some frustrations with my then current place of employment. Not with the management or staff, but with so many of the membership. A church is not a country club, folks...contributing financially to the work of the church does not entitle ANYONE to ANYTHING except to walk in the door, and even that doesn't require financial support. But there are some who believe that it does...that it gives them the right to determine policy, format, etc... and when they don't get their way, they whine worse than any 2 year old you know...they become a cancerous undercurrent that undermines the peace and harmony of the church. Such is the state of the church that I served.
It was sad. In these days of mainline denominations tanking in attendance and affiliation, one would think that folks would do everything that they could to be welcoming, affirming and nurturing without this sort of behavior. The myopic view of most of these destructive folks is much of the problem with a whole bunch of churches...these folks are older and will NOT get out of their comfort zones long enough to realize that most of them will not be around in 10 years and that the church, in order to continue its viability beyond their lives, MUST change to see to the needs of the younger generations. It matters not to them! And these are the same people who profess such a deep love for that church. They're hurting it and I fear, and with good reason, that the church I served is going the way of so many like-minded churches...down the drain to irrelevance.
Most of the folks are wonderful...the vast majority are the best. It's a shame that the few reflect so poorly on the many.
But, I am retired...I can no longer worry about that...the north woods calls.
